I get it. We are all putting off our regular appointments as long as possible, seeing what we can do for ourselves or what we can make at home.
During my time at home, when I could not work due to the pandemic, I pulled out my massage tools and started to work out my tight and sore spots. And it worked. I was able to address some old trigger points and found relief from some annoying aches.

Let's get started: 
I recommend The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davis, NCTMB. This book is very user friendly and teaches you how to work a trigger point safely.
A trigger point is a bundle of muscle fibers that are in a contracted state. Trigger points cause pain at the site or somewhere else in the body, called referred pain. Davis shows you exactly where to press to address a particular painful area. I also like that Davis advises to treat each point with a slight press and stroke instead of just applying deep pressure for several minutes. The stroke method allows fresh blood to come to the area and removes waste products. This promotes healing to the area. He also suggests 6-8 strokes several times a day. Less work, more frequency.  The trigger point is released when it no longer feels tender and the referred pain is gone.

Next, you will need the Thera Cane to be able to reach some of the points on your back, side and hips. There are plenty of versions of this tool, but I like this one because it is slightly smaller, sturdy and doesn't have extra features that get in the way. I feel like I can get good leverage without having to use a lot of extra strength.

One of my case stories was published in An Answer to Your Pain: CranioSacral Therapy Practitioner Case Stories edited by Upledger Institute International, Inc. Found on page 150, I wrote "Proof that Energy Fields Matter" after experiencing a mind opening session with a 6 month old baby.
This little boy
 had had many surgeries and procedures in the first 6 months of life. He was on a feeding tube and seemed to be always in discomfort. When I began the session, I discovered that before I could even touch his little body, I had to work off of his body. The baby would cry if my hand came too close to his body and then he would stop when I reached the perfect (for him) distance away from his body. I waited and paid attention to a change in quality of what my hands were feeling. Sometimes it felt like a repelling sensation, sometimes a tingling, sometimes a melting towards his body. When I felt a change I would test to see if I could let my hand come closer to him. His crying communicated to me when I went too close and when I was at a just right place. We did this back and forth dance for about 20 minutes. I was always paying attention to what my hands were feeling even though my hands were in the air. There was also a sense of the space around him, which I understand to be energy fields. At last, my hands landed gently onto his body and he softened and did not cry. He allowed me to touch him and he was able to receive the touch.  
​It is one thing to read about energy fields, it is another to experience validation or "proof" that the energy fields around us are real and important. To read more case stories and how people have been helped by CranioSacral Therapy, check out this book!
